TESTING PROGRAM

Having close to 100% of our students attend college after graduation places an emphasis on college selection. EXPLORE is administered to all freshmen and PLAN is administered to all sophomores to provide them with practice for the ACT and to use as a counseling tool for academic strengths and weaknesses. In the fall juniors and their parents attend a program on college selection, admissions and testing. College bound juniors take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) in October and continue investigating colleges. College admission representatives visit Powers regularly, and seniors may meet with them as long as they have the permission of their classroom teacher. Dates for school visits, college open houses, and area receptions are listed in the student daily bulletin.

The EXPLORE test is given to ninth graders to check their academic progress and to assist in their course placement for the next year. PLAN, given to sophomores, also tests achievement levels. In addition, students are provided with information about themselves to begin career planning.   The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) and Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) are offered to juniors. The results of these tests are interpreted in groups or individually. Juniors also take the MME, which includes a free ACT accepted by all colleges, to qualify for a college scholarship provided by the state. Practice test strategies for the PSAT & ACT are given prior to the test dates by teachers.

An ACT preparatory workshop will be offered, for a fee, on January 10th, 2015 from 8am - 1:30pm. You can find out more information by clicking here or inquiring at the Guidance Office.
