Business Club/DECA
The goal of the Business Club is to bring business and education together through conferences, networking opportunities and business operations.  If you are interested see Mrs. Goyette in the Advancement Office. 

Rotary Interact
Be the change you wish to see in the world. The young leaders of Powers Catholic High School are asked to join in a global call to action and a global call to create change.  Rotary urges them to work together to address fundamental, universal issues. These core issues are the heart of much of the suffering in our world, and Rotary believes that young people can come together to make a difference in these key areas. Rotary Interact will strive to motivate students, spread awareness, work to fight injustice, and make a difference in our world.

Chess Team and Chess Club
Chess Club begins in mid October and will run through February.  All students are welcome to be a part of the club and to participate with the team on occasion.  Organizational meetings will be announced in the student bulletin.

As many as six Powers sophomores and/or juniors are selected to spend a week in Washington, D. C., attending a workshop/seminar experience of government. The selection of students will be made in October on the basis of an essay and a speech.  Information will be in the daily announcements and on posters in homerooms.  See Mr. Schmit, for more information.
 

Drum Corp
If you are interested in percussion instruments and want to be involved in an exciting after school activity, you should think about joining the drum corp.  Interested students should talk to Mrs. Forsleff (Band Room).

Forensics
The Forensics Team participates in speech contests throughout the state in the spring, with students choosing a particular category of speech.  Students, 9-12, are eligible and should listen for announcements during September for the first team organizational meetings.  Mrs. Minor is the faculty moderator.

Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition (MMPC)
Powers students compete for college scholarships with students throughout the state.  This challenging exam will be administered here at 8:30 AM on Wednesday, October 10^th, and Part II at 8:30 on Wednesday, October 6th.  Interested students should speak to their math teacher for further information.

Model United Nations
Model United Nations of the University of Chicago involves 2,100 students from over 100 high schools, representing 115 different nations.  Students represent a given country in simulations of various U. N. committees and related bodies.  Topics include current issues and events in the world spotlight.  Look for more information in the student bulletin. Moderated by Mr. Schmit.

Modern Language Club
Modern Language Club is for any student interested in the languages and/or cultures of the varied backgrounds from which our student body comes.  A combination of the former French and Spanish Clubs, this group hopes to plan a number of after-school cultural events and perhaps a bus trip to Chicago in the spring.  All students are welcome, whether currently enrolled in a language class or not.  See Ms. VanCamp.

National Art Honor Society
To maintain membership in NAHS, students are required to serve 6 hours of service in the visual arts per year, (2 must be outside of Powers), pay $6.00 in dues, maintain a B or better cumulative average, and attend bi-monthly meeting.  One semester of a visual arts class must be completed before a students may be eligible for inductions.  See Mr. Voiles for information.

National Honor Society (NHS)
NHS is an organization of juniors and seniors who have demonstrated leadership, scholarship, character, and service, in addition to maintaining a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.  Eligible sophomores are contacted in March to invite them to apply. Moderated by Ms. Schuler and Mrs. Childers.

Speech Activities

Interpretation Pentathlon
In this forensics activity, students prepare five speeches:  prose, poetry, storytelling, dramatic interpretation, and a fifth speech of their choice.  The fifth speech can be an original piece of poetry, prose, or fiction, or a humorous piece by another author.  The competition will be held in December at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  Students do not need to be a forensics team member to participate.  Any interested students should contact Mrs. Minor early in the semester in order to begin preparation.
 

Optimist Oratorical Contest
Students will be invited to participate in the Optimist Club oratory contests held in each club in February and March.  Announcements will be made in English classes and in the student bulletin as the contest approaches.

Original Interpretation Tournament
This speech and creative writing activity will be held January 12 in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan.  Students in grades 9-12 write their own poetry, prose, or "children's story for all ages" and perform it.  Registration for this activity must be submitted to the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association in early October

 
Powderpuff Football
Junior and Senior girls organize into teams, practice, and compete against one another on the Wednesday night of Homecoming Week, September 27. Organizational information will be announced early in soon.

Quiz Bowl Team
The Powers Quiz Bowl Team competes in the WFUM High School Challenge program, the Big 9 Academic League, and the Genesee Academic League, as well as other invitational tournaments.  There are both varsity and junior varsity levels of competition.  All students are welcome.  Interested students should see Ms. Schuler. 

Robotics Team
The Robotics Team recruits new members from September through December.  They are looking for students with interest and expertise in mathematics, science, engineering, and computers.  The team meets throughout the year to fundraise and, beginning in December, to design and build a robot according to the competition specifications.  The team will enter several nationwide competitions. 
 

Students for Life
Students for Life is a pro-life organization whose members spread the message of pro-life through different community awareness activities. Interested students should see Fr. Dan or junior Katie Buchanan.

Student Congress
In this forensics activity students participate in a three day simulated government experience at the state capitol building in Lansing in September.  Students qualify for roles as senators, representatives, lobbyists, etc, by participating successfully in a spring discussion festival.  The program will be advertised in the student bulletin in May.  The moderator for this activity is Mrs. Minor.

Student Government
Student Government plans, implements, and funds a majority of student activities in the school.  Elections for sophomore, junior, and senior student government members are held in May.  Elections for five freshman student government members are held in September.  Petitions with 50 student and 2 faculty signatures must be turned in prior to the elections.  Candidates are asked to make a brief, two minute speech, at a class meeting just prior to elections.

Student Trainers
The Athletic Department is looking for students who would like to learn how to assist the trainer with organizing first aid equipment, pre-game taping, and first aid measures.  Students who are interested should give their names to Mrs. Adams or Mr. Sheeran in the Athletic Office.  Mrs. Hartman, the trainer, will give instruction to student trainers in the Training Room after school. 
 

Talent Show
The Powers Talent Show is a Student Government sponsored activity, which is planned as a fund raiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  This year's show is scheduled for April 24th.  Information on entering the Talent Show will be published in the student bulletin in March.

Theater
The Theater department at Powers Catholic is not only known for its phenomial productions, but also its welcoming atmosphere. Whether you are interested in acting, costume design, hair and makeup, choreography, lighting and sound, set building, or backstage help, all are welcome to come take part. More information is available from our wonderful Drama Director, Mrs. Evans.

Voice of Democracy Speech Contest
Powers students, grades 9-12, are invited to participate in the VFW speech contest in October.  Last year the first place winner at Powers received a $200.00 bond and trophy, the second place winner received a $150.00 bond, and the third place winner received a $100.00 bond.  The first place winner of Powers contest will have a professional recording made of his or her speech.  That recording will be sent on to regional, state, and national competition where there are further prizes.  Students will receive further information on this competition in their English classes.

Outside Opportunities
Many leadership programs and other opportunities sponsored by outside groups will be advertised in the Guidance Bulletin which is sent to homerooms on Monday or in the daily student bulletin which is read in homeroom.
